VirCru began with a clear brief from Tristan Dargay, our founder, and boat owners he worked with: “Give me confidence when I’m not on board”. The system needed to provide a single, dependable view of the vessel – position, power, bilge, environmental safety, motion and more – pushed to a phone in real-time. TAD was asked to design and manufacture the complete hardware suite: a GPRS-enabled hub, a family of wireless sensors and a clean, integration-ready path to the VirCru mobile app. Everything had to be rugged, low-power and cost-effective to produce at scale.
We designed and manufactured the central hub as the “brain” of the system – optimised for low idle draw, robust cellular comms and simple onboarding. The hub aggregates sensor data, handles power state transitions gracefully and keeps the connection alive for event delivery without draining batteries.
The VirCru sensor family monitors GPS position and boat angle, as well as battery voltage and shore power connection, bilge pump levels, isolator status, motion, cabin temperature, smoke, and CO presence, outside temperature, and engine hours. Each device is tuned for low power and reliable signalling in a confined, RF-challenging space.
The VirCru app presents a clean, real-time dashboard and sends push alerts before small issues become expensive problems. Beyond monitoring, owners can switch lights, heaters and fridges remotely – useful for arriving to a warm, lit cabin or protecting perishables – without being aboard.
Hardware and firmware were architected for quick, non-specialist installation and repeatable manufacture. The system pairs easily, utilises marine-grade materials and finishes, and provides a stable interface for the app, allowing features to evolve without requiring hardware updates.
Unlike fixed installations, boats are harsh, variable environments: vibration, salt air, humidity, temperature swings and intermittent power. Any solution had to sip energy for long unattended periods, yet wake instantly for events (e.g. power loss or a rising bilge). Connectivity was equally critical – reliable over-the-air updates and reporting from widely dispersed marinas demanded a cellular approach that just works. Finally, installation had to be owner-friendly: minimal wiring, compact sensors, and a setup flow that didn’t require a specialist or days in the yard.
VirCru gives owners calm certainty: where the boat is, whether the power is healthy, if the bilge is rising, and whether the cabin environment is safe. Real-time alerts arrive early – before a flat battery strands a vessel, before a slow leak becomes a salvage operation, before a CO event becomes a dangerous situation. The combination of low-power hardware, dependable GPRS connectivity and a straightforward app experience has made the system a trusted companion across marinas in Europe. Installation is fast, the UI is intuitive, and the ecosystem scales from a single-day boat to multi-cabin cruisers with diverse monitoring needs.
Commercially, the design supports efficient production and long service intervals: sensors are designed to target a 10-year battery life, while the hub’s power strategy suits moored vessels that may remain unattended for months. The platform is also extensible – new sensor types and app features can be added without disturbing the core architecture.
